When moving clothes, it is important to ensure they remain clean, undamaged, and easily accessible upon arrival at the new place. Remember that proper packing and handling of clothing during the move is crucial for preserving its quality and safety. If there is any uncertainty about special requirements for certain garments, it is possible to consult textile experts or a moving company with relevant experience.

Tips for Moving Clothes Properly

  • Clean and organize: Before moving, it is advisable to wash or dry-clean clothes and organize them thoroughly. Remove all dirt and make sure the clothes are in good condition for the move.

  • Sort by season: If possible, separate clothes by season. This allows packing and storing off-season items so they can be placed “at the back” right away in the new home and helps keep the wardrobe organized.

  • Consider sorting by category: Clothes can be divided into categories such as dresses, T-shirts, trousers, etc. This makes it easier to find and arrange clothing after arrival.

  • Use suitable packaging: Choose appropriate containers for storing clothes. Cardboard boxes, plastic crates, wardrobe boxes or garment covers can be used. For more delicate pieces, special protective covers are suitable. Unused seasonal items can be stored in vacuum bags to save space.

  • Packing methods: There are several ways to pack clothes efficiently. The folding method can be used, folding clothes into square or rectangular shapes, or the “rolling” method, where non-crease garments are rolled into a bundle.

  • Label the containers: Label containers with clothes so it is clear what is inside. This makes it easy to find specific items after arrival.

  • Special garments: Very valuable or damage-sensitive pieces can be packed separately and transported personally or stored in a special wardrobe box that protects them.

  • Handling the containers: Handle containers with clothes carefully to minimize damage.

  • Keep clothes clean: Before packing and moving, make sure clothes are clean and dry. Washing or dry-cleaning before the move helps remove dirt and odors and ensures that clothes stay fresh throughout transport.

  • Layering and wrapping: For easily creased garments such as dresses, skirts or suits, wrap them in a light fabric material to minimize friction and wrinkling. Use bubble wrap to protect delicate parts such as buttons, hems or decorations.

  • Proper placement and lifting: When packing and handling a box of clothes, proper positioning is important. Lighter items can be placed at the top of the box, while heavier pieces should go closer to the bottom. The side with the bottom can be marked on the outside of the box with an arrow. When lifting the box, hold it firmly by the bottom and set it down with the heavier side facing down.

  • Wardrobe care after arrival: After arriving at the new place, remove clothes from the packaging as soon as possible. Straighten them, iron if necessary, and place them in the new wardrobe or closet. Make sure the space is well ventilated and adequately lit to minimize moisture and odors.
